"We are all aware that technology has and will further improve patient safety. However, eMPOWERx has found a way to transition practices that have no electronic medical records to the use of this system in a very user-friendly manner.
The most important uses for us include the up-to-date formulary for several companies and the automatic notification of interactions and duplications.
The first saves time for the patient waiting at the pharmacy, while we all try to figure out which medicine is actually covered. The second shows potential and actual interactions between the patient’s medications.
From the very start with our introductions to the technology, through the on-site in-services when the eMPOWERx representatives came to our office at the time we requested, to the technical support for the few problems we have had, the eMPOWERx team has been outstanding. On occasion, they have even walked us through any issues, step by step, no matter how long it has taken.
I encourage all the physicians and offices that I speak with to consider this technology."

"I am part of a four physician group that has been using the eMPOWERx program now for nearly 6 months. We were the first Ophthalmology practice in the state of Florida to implement the system into our daily routine. We are all very impressed by the accuracy and ease of use of the eMPOWERx program. It has helped us to identify medications that the patient is on even when the patient left the long list at home. This helps to eliminate drug interactions and also inform us of various medical conditions that the patient forgot to inform us about. For example, one patient neglected to tell us he wass on coumadin prior to surgery.
On many occasions while on call, we have received requests for refills but previously had to go into the office to review the chart. Now with eMPOWERx, the list of medicines as well as the pharmacy address and phone number is readily accessible on the PDA. In addition, we are now able to see if the patient is going to multiple physicians for the same problem and this eliminates duplication of efforts and drug interactions. Patients are also amazed when the PDA transmits the script to their pharmacy right before our eyes. The office is perceived as state of the art and the patient requests are answered immediately. We are all thrilled with the program and look forward to expansion of it hopefully into the Medicare population."

"I have been using eMPOWERx for the last six months and I can not imagine my work without it now. I use it for all of its features. I track patient's prescription usage. I just wish all my patients were in the database and not just the Medicaid patients. I use the pharmacopoeia for drug info. My nurses use the online services to track patients and look up drugs. I am a radiation oncologist and so there are always new oral biological agents, hormonal agents, new anti cancer therapies that are coming out that I look up and find in eMPOWERx. With the password controls and dual verification, I feel confident that my patient information is not being abused."
Dr. David Cho, Medical Director, Southeast Regional Cancer Center, Tallahassee, FL
"Another problem I have been able to follow up on is patients seeking drugs. eMPOWERx allows me to know if they need counseling or a referral to a clinic for pain control. Thank you again for a long-time, needed service in the medical community."
Dr. Guy Farmer, The Calhoun City Medical Clinic, Calhoun City, MS
"Again, the value of this service. Today one patient with abnormal LFT's I have been chasing was found on eMPOWERx review to be on a drug that could cause the disorder. This patient had not told me he was on the drug so it was absent on our medication log."
Dr. Jeffrey Beal, Hendry/Glades County Health Dept., Labelle, FL
"I am a primary care physician working at the Children's Diagnostic & Treatment Center in Ft. Lauderdale. This center services, primarily, children with special health care needs. Because of the particular needs of our patients, it is paramount to have access at all times to their medication profile, which is one of the features of the eMPOWERx system. The use of this system allows me to make sure that I am sending the prescriptions directly to the pharmacy, so I do not have to rely on faxes and additional phone calls that many times are made depending on availability of personnel and sometimes do not occur in a timely manner. Even more, the prescription is clear with no room for misinterpretation and there is a minimal risk of mistakes.
eMPOWERx also allows me to identify medications prescribed by other physicians, preventing dangerous interactions as well as allowing me to identify undisclosed visits to the emergency room or to other practices where additional prescriptions for similar or same medications could have been requested.
In general, the system has been very useful for me. It has been a reliable tool that has allowed me to take control of prescriptions for my Medicaid patients.
I know that some of my colleagues have been reluctant to give in to the use of this system, but I also know that it has a lot to do with lack of familiarity with computers and PDAs. But once you get in to it, it's quite addictive, easy to use and it doesn't seem so time consuming."

"I enjoy using the eMPOWERx device as it provides a valuable service to my patients in that they can go to the pharmacy and have their prescriptions waiting with no delay in getting the medications started. There are reduced dosage errors since the pharmacist can easily read what is written. Its ease of use makes eMPOWERx convenient for my office and it is portable anywhere I go.
Other benefits of eMPOWERx include the fact that I am able to see if my patients are taking their medications as prescribed, and I am able to use the program desktop or portable and the drug formulary saves a lot of time searching for my PDR. I would recommend this valuable tool to all prescribers to see how it can speed their office time in prescribing."

"The providers at Peace River Center are striving to decrease patient error by increasing legibility of scripts through the eMPOWERx Prescription Writer. On the pharmacy end, the biggest benefits of using eMPOWERx are sending legible scripts and decreasing medication errors. By utilizing the patient medication history, my staff is able to prevent patients from refilling prescriptions too soon, avoid duplications in therapy and identify doctor shoppers."
Dr. Diana Mimms

"I have been using eMPOWERx since December 2004 and have been extremely happy with the program. It is user friendly, simple, and saves a lot of time. Now I have the option to queue up multiple prescriptions and send them simultaneously. It is especially convenient if I am trying to fill a patient's script after hours; there is no need to call the pharmacy.
I think eMPOWERx will contribute greatly in reducing medical errors. One of the reasons I like the program is because it gives ready access to the patient's medication list (especially useful if the provider has a large migrant population or a sub specialist started a certain medication and the patient / parent does not know the name or the exact dose). Writing electronic prescriptions also saves time for the patient, and the medications might even be ready by the time the patient gets to the pharmcy. I really like the program and would encourage other providers to try it."

"Florida Medicaid, through eMPOWERx, took the initiative
to bring communication between physicians and pharmacists
into the 21st century. A description and the
benefits of electronic prescribing are well detailed
on the eMPOWERx website. Here, I would like to describe
my experience with the system. I work for the Miami
Beach Community Health Center, a federally funded and
qualified, JCAHO accredited Center serving the local
population.
There is no other system at present that brings patient information to the point
of care in an efficient manner. Now, instead of deciphering if “the pink little
pill” prescribed by the consultant last week interacts with my prescribed regimen,
I can check the patient profile and obtain the information. This has saved me,
and my staff, as well as the consultant’s staff and pharmacy, a significant amount
of time. The system has also allowed me to identify patients who shop for doctors,
and to flag them for review.
Entering new patients into the system is easy. Writing a prescription is quick
and simple; authorizing a refill request by the pharmacy is literally a snap.
Unfortunately, physicians have not been too enthusiastic at embracing new communication
technologies. I believe the ones of us who are willing to try new systems have
some implicit trust in electronic tools; however, we expect the level of technology
to be at least on par with the state of the art. With eMPOWERx, there is an
initial but rapid learning curve. In all, this is a good system that has the
potential for being great. I have no doubt that we will soon have data on improved
efficiency and, more importantly, on patient safety by using the eMPOWERx system."
Dr. Jorge Rangel-Meneses
Miami Beach Community Health Center, Miami Beach, FL
"I have
been using eMPOWERx Prescription writer for about
a month now. I love it and my patients love it
because they no longer have to make an extra trip
to the pharmacy to take the prescription. I get
fewer calls from pharmacies questioning the prescriptions
since they are not hand-written. I am saving time,
minimizing risks of side effects and duplications
of medications. I also use it as a teaching tool
to let patients know how computers can make our
lives easier and teach them and myself about medication
side effects and once they see the whole list of
medications they are on, many of them realize they
may be overmedicated by too many prescribing physicians.
When I am out of the office or at home and a patient
calls, they are amazed when at the end of the call
I tell them "I already sent your prescription electronically
to the pharmacy." Looking back, I am very pleased
having joined the program and hope it continues
to improve. It would be ideal to have the name
of the prescribing physician on the list of medications
and have more than three months of data."

“The Florida Medicaid program is committed
to providing healthcare services that improve health
outcomes for our beneficiaries. Empowering our providers
to better meet their patient's needs through the use
of new technology is the type of innovative partnerships
that Florida Medicaid is participating in to better
serve both our providers and patients.”

“Quality patient care begins and ends with accurate,
real time, point-of-service information. eMPOWERx addresses
some of the more critical information needs of physicians,
including the ability to review prior prescription filled,
drug-drug interaction checking, and preferred drug list
status, in a way that easily integrates itself into
a busy practice.”
B. Bognar, MD

“Never before have physicians had electronic access
to widely dispersed, patient-specific, clinical information.
Wirelessly integrating all of a patient's medication
history at the point-of-care will empower physicians
to identify dangerous combinations of medications, improve
care and decrease healthcare costs.”
